It’s a Freelancing Platform

You’ve probably heard of Fiverr but are unfamiliar with whether or not it’s a legit platform to use. Founded in Israel in 2010, Fiverr is a freelancing platform offering digital services all around the world. The idea behind the platform was to offer a place where businesses could easily be connected with a freelancer to help fulfill specific business needs. The company got its title by starting out with each gig offered for only five dollars—articles, designs and more. However, Fiverr has since expanded and offers a variety of gigs for a variety of prices.

Not only does Fiverr offer competitive, and often cheaper, prices than competing platforms, it also offers virtually unlimited types of services. For those interested in buying or selling on Fiverr the following guide explains more about the platform, the pros and cons of Fiverr, and how buying and selling works.

How Fiverr Works

Fiverr is one of the largest online marketplaces in the world. The basic premise of Fiverr is pretty easy to understand—sellers create profiles offering their services and buyers can view and purchase services from buyer profiles. Originally, all services on Fiverr were offered for only $5, hence the title of the platform. However, services now vary from $5 to $1,000s, based on what the service offers.

What’s great about Fiverr is how easily freelancers and businesses are connected to each other. Additionally, Fiverr is flexible, convenient and provides variety to both buyers and sellers, connecting both to exactly what they need.

As previously mentioned, the platform caters to two audiences—sellers and buyers. For a seller, setting up a profile and gigs is the first step to selling on the platform. Once a profile is set up and gigs created, Fiverr can push your profile on its platform to connect you to buyers. For buyers, Fiverr is a well organized and simple platform offering gigs in virtually every online digital service including the following:

  • Graphics & Design
  • Digital Marketing
  • Writing & Translation
  • Video & Animation
  • Music & Audio
  • Programming & Tech
  • Business
  • Lifestyle

Purchasing the right gig for your needs often requires a little searching and messaging to find the right buyer for you.

Fiverr Pros & Cons

As Fiverr is one of many online freelancing platforms, there are many benefits that set it apart as well as some not-so-fabulous parts to the platform. Below is a review of the pros and cons of Fiverr.

Fiverr Pros

  1. Where freelancers traditionally seek out work for themselves, Fiverr brings the work to them. Instead of spending time finding the work, Fiverr allows a seller to set up a profile and let the platform do the heavy lifting.
  2. Fiverr was originally designed to offer all services for only $5. Because of that, Fiverr offers significantly cheaper services than its competitor counterparts. Additionally, it is designed to offer a variety services, again including a variety of prices as well.
  3. Fiverr offers the ability to add revisions to each order. This is a great option for both the buyer and seller as it provides the ability for the seller to provide the best quality service and for the buyer to get the best out of the money spent.
  4. For buyers, Fiverr offers the option to “heart” gigs; for those who would like to save a gig for later or flag a service used in this past, this is a great way to remember what that gig was so you can contact the buyer. Fiverr also offers the option to organize favorited gigs into lists for organizational purposes.
  5. Fiverr allows the opportunity to mix and match your needs for projects, providing great overall flexibility. Let’s say you have a website you need coded by a top-rated web developer—choose from the Fiverr Pro options. Or you might need an SEO blog post written by a decent seller but not the best option Fiverr has to offer. You might choose to freelance that work to a cheaper seller. Whatever it might be, Fiverr provides and option for your needs.
  6. Fiverr offers 24/7 customer service for both buyers and sellers. The resolution center provides preventative measures to make sure both parties, buyers and sellers, are happy with the process of the order.

Fiverr Cons

  1. Because virtually anyone can start a freelancing business through Fiverr, not all gigs are created equal. Some sellers are much more skilled in their professions than are others. It is very important to be careful with the gigs you purchase as there are many people on Fiverr trying to make money without much actual skill.
  2. Fiverr allows buyers to purchase a gig prior to contacting the seller. Though this might be convenient for a buyer, it also leads to miscommunication. Buyers also might purchase a gig that is not right for their needs or that the seller does not feel qualified to complete. That said, a quick and easy fix to this issue is contacting the buyer before the purchase to make sure all parties are on the same page before the project starts.
  3. Fiverr provides a variety of gig options and features for buyers to utilize in their gigs. Though this is convenient for sellers, as each can add specific customizations to their gigs, this can be confusing for buyers who are trying to compare different gigs to each other. Additionally, each gig offers between 2–3 package options. Though you might be interested in purchasing a gig from a certain seller, their most basic package may not meet your needs. It can take some time to sift through all the options and buyers to find the package and gig that best meets your needs.
  4. Fiverr does take 20% of every order from a sellers and charges service feeds to buyers. It is good to always be aware of the additional fees and how Fiverr will take more money from you.

Buying on Fiverr vs. Selling on Fiverr

Buying on Fiverr

Buying on Fiverr is incredibly easy. The first step is to sign up for a buyer account. After doing so, there are three ways to find gigs to purchase on Fiverr:

  1. The first is to utilize the top navigation which splits Fiverr gigs into sections. If you are looking for a service in the “Video & Animation” arena, hovering over that section in the top navigation will allow you to see all the options that fall under a specific category. From there, you can view all the gig options that fall in that type of service.
  2. However, if you would like to search for a specific type of gig, you can utilize the search bar mechanism to find the gig you are looking for.
  3. For those who do not have the time of day to sift through multiple gigs, Fiverr provides an option to post public job requests. When doing so, a buyer lists specific information about their needs and has the option to attach files, categorize the request, add a price and add a delivery date. Sellers can then message you with offers for your project.

One thing to note is that sellers do get to rate their buyers at the end of a purchase. That said, it is equally important to be a responsive buyer as it is to be a responsive seller. Also, make sure to give as specific instructions as possible in your communication with the seller. Doing so will lead to less potential issues down the road.

Tips for Buying on Fiverr

  1. Research gigs and find a small group of sellers that meet your personal needs and look like quality sellers.
  2. Read reviews on seller profiles to see what people have to say about the quality of service provided.
  3. Save these sellers in your favorites lists and separate by categories.
  4. Do not be fooled by the rating system; there are good and bad sellers at every level on Fiverr. Still do your homework to find the best gigs.
  5. Ask sellers for a sample of their previous work.
  6. Find reliable sellers and return to them when you need new services.

Selling on Fiverr

Fiverr is by no means the only or even the best platform for all freelancers to sell on. However, for those who are interested in starting out or branching into a variety of selling options, Fiverr is a great platform to do so.

Selling on Fiverr looks something like this—do some research to understand all of the types of gigs offered on Fiverr. Find some areas that you could be successful in and research other sellers offering services in that area. What is already offered on Fiverr? What could you offer that would add value to the platform? From there, create an account and build out your gigs—note that some gigs require proof or verification of your skill in that given field.

After building out your gigs and packages offered, you can promote your gig on other social media platforms or wait for buyers to organically message you through Fiverr. After talking with buyers, you will start to see orders come through.

Fiverr Pro

Though Fiverr is designed to be a platform for all types of sellers, some needs require pro sellers to fulfill the requirements. At the top of its line, Fiverr offers the “Fiverr Pro” option. To become a Fiverr Pro seller, you must submit an applica tion. This application is then reviewed by a board of Fiverr reviewers with only the top 1% being certified as pros. With the Fiverr Pro option, Fiverr offers a level of service for anyone seeking gigs to purchase.

Is Fiverr worth it?

Fiverr is absolutely worth it if you are looking for an easy way to either connect to freelancers or if you are looking for a good platform to freelance on. The worst outcome, if you are careful, is that you lose out on a few dollars if the services do not work out. However, Fiverr can connect you to millions of sellers and a multitude of resources, making it a legitimate service to test out.
